Symbolism and Irony At The WWII Memorial

Category: Shutdown

by Dave Mindeman

See if you can figure out what is wrong with what went on at the WWII memorial by this account....

"Let me ask a simple question," Cruz told the crowd of hundreds that gathered beginning at 9 a.m. "Why is the federal government spending money to erect barricades to keep veterans out of this memorial?"

Black metal barricades have lined the front of the memorial since the government closed Oct. 1. That's when more than 300 National Park Service workers who staff and maintain the National Mall were furloughed.

As the crowd entered the memorial plaza, they chanted "Tear down these walls" and "You work for us." They sang "God bless America" and other songs.

Here is the list:

1) No supervision. Because the workers that oversee the Memorials are furloughed, the monuments can't be supervised. They are open to being damaged or defaced. Now I am not saying that the people who were there at 9am had that in mind, but what was there to stop them if they had wanted to? They are actually putting our precious memorials at risk.

2) Cruz, Palin, et.al are the main advocates of the Shutdown. If Cruz would listen to himself he would be amazed at what he is saying. The government isn't putting up barricades because it is their preference. It is because YOU, Senator Cruz, and your like minded instigators, have used these memorials as pawns in your power trip.

3) "You work for us"??? NO....... they don't work for you because you laid them off. Some of them are actually working for nothing because they are deemed essential. They would like to work again if you all would just fund the government.

This all has a touch of irony. These protesters were incensed that the World War II memorial was closed. They blamed the government. The government that they hate and refuse to pay for. World War II vets fought and died to keep that government in place. And now the Tea Party rabble has shut it down in an extortion plot that no freedom loving American should ever condone.
